For more than 10 years, Bob Cummins has spent countless weekends and hours volunteering as a rowing race official.Like many of the employees at Pocock Racing Shells who are actively involved in rowing, he doesn't do it for money or fame.He simply does it for the love of the sport.

USRowing recently recognized Cummins and his dedication to the sport of rowing by naming him the winner of the 2004 Julian Wolf Award.Cummins was presented with this award to honor his outstanding achievements and contributions to rowing officiating.

Cummins brings this same level of performance to his job at Pocock Racing Shells, where he builds the carbon fiber wing riggers for the HypercarbonÔ racing shells.

"I was completely surprised and had no idea that I was even being considered for the award," said Cummins, who has been a Northwest region rowing official for more than 10 years."I didn't think I was doing anything different than anyone else, but apparently somebody else does.Somebody in the Northwest snuck one in on me."

"Bob has demonstrated the qualities embodied in the Julian Wolf award more than any other referee in the region this year," said Warren Polensky, fellow USRowing Northwest region referee.
    ...
In addition to his outstanding performance on the water, Cummins developed and built portable starting line platforms for starters and referees. This innovation is one of numerous ways that he positively impacted his fellow referees in 2004.

"Let's face it, most of us referees are out doing it for the love of the sport," said Cummins."It keeps you young. You're around young folks who are energetic and enthusiastic and it's fun to travel across the country to different regattas where you meet great people."

"Bob is one of my favorite officials and USRowing is lucky to have him in our ranks," said Jody Pope, USRowing Membership Director.
    ...
In addition to working at Pocock Racing Shells, Cummins and his family have a storied rowing background.Cummins rowed at the University of Washington in the late 1960s and is currently active in the Lake Stevens Rowing Club, where he runs the Head of the Bull Trout and the Northwest College Championship regattas.

His daughter, Angie, rowed for the U.S. national team, winning a gold medal at the 1999 World Championships in the lightweight quad. His son, Bob Jr., stroked the University of Washington's varsity eight that won the 1997 IRA and rowed in the U.S. men's eight that won the 1997 World Championships.

Pocock Racing Shells is proud to have employees like Bob Cummins who are dedicated to the sport of rowing both in our shop and on the water.

,This is the biggest collegiate rowing event for the NCAA bid in the Northwest,, said LSRC founder Bob Cummins.

Cummins, who was a collegiate rower himself at University of Washington in the 1960s, was instrumental in bringing the event to Lake Stevens five years ago.

Because of its shape, Lake Stevens is considered to be an excellent lake for regattas like the NCRC championship.Although this was the fifth year the NCRC championship was held on Lake Stevens, it was the first time the collegiate crews were able to try out the LSRC,s new buoyed course.

,(The buoyed course) is a favorite thing at the championship level,, said Cummins.

Lake Stevens Rowing Club President Bob Cummins has worked hard the past few years to make Lake Stevens a top rowing venue."There's a lot of potential on this lake," says Cummins.

With major rowing events like the Northwest Collegiate Rowing Conference Cascade Sprint coming to the lake April 24, the popularity of rowing in the area is on the rise.Lake Stevens will host the NCRC Championships for the third straight year. The rowing event features Division II and III colleges from the northwest and will include dozens of races.Other events like the Bull Trout Regatta held in the fall are helping to make Lake Stevens prime rowing real estate.

"My vision is to do some higher quality racing on the lake," says Cummins.Part of that vision includes getting a boat-house and new equipment, a weight room and even a semi-permanent rowing course installed in the lake.

Right now, the closest course is in Rancho Cordova, CA, the only course on the west coast. With 70 percent of the west coast's rowing population in the Seattle/Vancouver area, Cummins sees a great prospect in Lake Stevens.

"There is a huge opportunity and a need to get a buoy course in the lake," says Cummins."You get that in and we can start to hold regional championships, PAC-10 type schools and Canadian rowers."

Cummins, who has rowed around the country, says Lake Stevens is one of the best venues for rowing."If you finish a race in the cove it's just a perfect, quiet spot to finish a race - much more observer friendly than other lakes," says Cummins.
