Humberto Cruz
Humberto C. Cruz, born and raised in La Habana, Cuba, attended the University De La Habana and received his Masters Degree in Geographic Sciences in 1989.
Although once a student of geography, he could not avoid the overwhelming call within to be an artist.
In 1990, he began working as an artist on environmental art projects for public buildings and tourist facilities all over Cuba.
During this decade, he also presented his work in exhibitions in Europe, Japan and Latin America.
Through his art, Cruz explores and captures the relationship between man and nature, as well as, the magic of ancient cultures from a contemporary perspective.
In a body of work consisting of paintings, murals and sculptures, his lines, shades of color and rich textures interlock to form images that awaken the imagination.
In the past three years, Cruz has participated in 10 solo exhibitions and several collective shows at such venues as The Wadsworth Atheneum, Real Art Ways and Yale University.
His work is also represented at the Secretary of Multicultural Affairs of UNESCO in Paris and the ARTEBA FOUNDATION of Buenos Aries, Argentina.
Cruz has received many commissions from such institutions as Hartford Hospital and the Village for Families and Children, among others.
Presently a professor at Talcott Mountain Academy, the Farmington Valley Arts Center, and the Greater Hartford Arts Council, Humberto still maintains a close contact with his family, country and culture.
His studio in La Habana is still open and his artistic works have become well known in Europe, Japan, Latin America, the Caribbean, and United States.
