3. CropTech Corp. files for Chapter 11

The biotechnology firm quietly filed for Chapter 11 debtor-in-possession late last week, putting plans for the firm's move to South Carolina on hold, said Philip Crowther, CropTech's chief financial officer.
CropTech gained national recognition for its work on alternate uses of tobacco crops, particularly for medical possibilities.
...
Crowther said the 20-person firm has stopped operating.
CropTech seemed poised to take off in 2000, after attracting $2.3 million in venture capital in 1999. The firm had a deal with a consortium of farmers and the Virginia Tobacco Indemnification and Community Revitalization Commission.
The deal, backed by a $2 million state loan, called for growers to invest in CropTech and gain rights to generate tobacco for the company's product development. But the deal fizzled and CropTech began to search for incentives from other states in 2001.
