Shaun Crowley, the chief executive officer of Morry's, spoiled the first paragraph of this review when I interviewed him on the telephone Saturday.

"We never intended to name that space, but our customers kept referring to it as 'the back room at Morry's,' " said Crowley. So he wisely adopted the name.

The room is a finished dining room, but only part of Crowley's extensive plan. What he wants to do is go back half a century, when life was simpler and there were no DVD players or Internet. In those days, when most people rarely ate at restaurants, one of the favored social activities was a progressive dinner.

A group of friends would start the evening with appetizers and drinks at one couple's house, then drive to another couple's house for salad, another house for the main course and another house for dessert. Yes, I know that some people are still doing this instead of playing Sudoko on the computer.

Crowley does it, but not at homes. "When my friends and I go out to dine, we like to start at one place and go to another place," he said. "We want to give people the option of that under one roof, especially the people of Naples."

What that means is that when construction is finished, the present Back Room will become a large lounge where they can enjoy an aperitif or glass of wine and appetizers. "We hope that if they want a more intimate, softer-focused dining experience, they can progress to the next room," said Crowley.

Crowley was a political science major in college in New Jersey but then briefly went astray and became a newspaper reporter in Jacksonville, N.C.

He finally came to his senses and moved to California with a friend and helped open the wine store on Lido Isle. He had learned about wine from the executive director of the Park Avenue Club in Madison, N.J., while he was working his way through college.

In Newport, he helped open a restaurant in the wine store and worked with the store owners in opening Lequai. Then he went to work for a wine distributor, and his territory included Long Beach.

"We comfortably seat 45," said Crowley.

"We're going to adjust the lighting," Crowley said.

"I was skeptical when I heard about the wine, but after I tasted it I was just humbled," says Shaun Crowley, manager of Morry's of Naples, which stocks both Rosenthal Merlot and the Back Bay Cuvee.
