As the Greater Hernando County Chamber of Commerce's marketing representative the past five years, Pat Crowley got to know first-hand the issues that matter most to local business. When she wasn't promoting the chamber, she was recruiting new members or setting up ribbon-cutting events. Friday, the chamber board of directors rewarded Crowley and did some promoting of its own by appointing her executive director of the 1,000-member organization.
    ...
Crowley, scheduled to begin her new duties Jan. 1, will be instrumental in several new chamber projects aimed at increasing the organization's "business voice" in the county, she said. To that end, the chamber's businesses assistance committee is developing plans for a Business Development Week in 2005. The government affairs committee is working with the local realtors and builders association to monitor legislative issues. The chamber also wants a more visible presence and is seeking to move from its two small rented locations into a larger facility somewhere in the county. So how did Crowley's first day on the job go? "So far, so good," she joked. "I have a pretty strong relationship with the business community and I have a pulse as far as our membership," Crowley said. "We have a very strong membership now and are very fortunate to be the only chamber in Hernando County." She said she wants to help both new and existing business members establish themselves here and increase services. "There is a major growth in our businesses and I think we at the chamber are going to play a major role in their growth and making them successful," she said. Crowley said a major goal is to open a new chamber office in a centralized part of the county. People don't realize, she said, that chambers are often the first place new residents go when relocating to an area. The drop-in traffic at the existing offices is great, she said, and given the new subdivisions moving in, it is imperative the chamber have the necessary information packets and brochures on hand to help them. "We are very much an information center," Crowley said.
