Crowley excelled in football, basketball and baseball in the early 1940's. Crowley played halfback and punter on the 1940 and 1941 football teams, and forward and center on the 1940-41 and 1941-42 basketball teams while serving as captain his senior season. He was the leading hitter on the baseball team in both 1941 and 1942. While at UMaine, Crowley served as class treasurer, was a member of the Sophomore Owls, the Pale Blue Key Organization, and the Senior Skulls. After graduation, he played both semi-pro basketball and baseball. Crowley was also a distinguished coach (baseball, basketball, and football) in the high school ranks. He coached in Maine for 19 years and was named Maine Coach of the Year in 1948. Crowley is a member of the Lewiston-Auburn, Maine Sports and John Bapst Halls of Fame.
