   "We were able to quickly and easily migrate some of the existing I/O from the 984B PLC to the new Quantum PLC because it supported the existing 800 series I/O," observes Crowley. Communication between the 984B and Quantum PLCs was done via Modbus Plus over fibre optic media. PLC and remote I/O communication was also done via fibre optic media. "We chose fibre optic media to minimize cable noise and facilitate communication over a long distance (1200 feet)," explains Crowley. Also, fibre optic modems facilitated the transition between the existing network and fibre optic cable, and allowed the possibility of future expansion and upgrading to Concept software. "Fibre optic media maximizes system reliability and minimizes maintenance costs," affirms Crowley.

   Adds Crowley, "the availability of Modbus protocol on Modicon PLCs facilitated the 'plug and play' integration of the Modicon PLCs with the flow computers."
