Craig, 43, is the Chief Executive of Action Deafness, a regional voluntary community sector organisation based in the East Midlands. A native of Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, his passion for Deaf Sport, particularly in football, led him to move south to join Friends for Young Deaf. At FYD he helped to organise and facilitate a variety of sport coaching and leadership training courses in the 1980s and early 1990s. He was one of the original founders of UK Deaf Sport and was elected to the role of Chair of the organisation in June 2003.
A silver-medallist for Great Britain Football at the Deaflympics in Los Angeles 1985 he also gained international honours with England Deaf Football. He is also a qualified sport coach/teacher and has gained colours for Football, Cricket and Tennis.
Craig has also held positions as Trustee and Governor for three national voluntary organisations and a Higher Education Institute. He was recently awarded an MBE for his services to Deaf Sport at The Queens 80th Birthday Celebrations in 2006.
Craig believes that despite the fact that UK Deaf Sport has now achieved recognition as a bona-fide organisation, acquired registered charity and international membership status, UKDS is now at a critical stage. He feels that its trustees, staff, volunteers and all National Deaf Sport Organisations need to look at ways of gathering additional support to ensure the continuation of the community at the same time as promoting greater opportunities for all Deaf Sportspeople.
In his capacity as Chair Craig is passionate and committed to ensuring that UK Deaf Sport meets the growing demands for the development of the elite performance agenda from the Government. He also wishes to push for financial assistance to support all existing as well as future budding athletes to participate in such prestigious events as the Deaflympics, which could face potential disbandment due to funding cuts in the sector. Craig explained that "There has been strong focus on channeling resources to the Olympics and Paralympics, but the Deaflympics has not been awarded equity as a stand alone event. -

Action Deafness in Leicester is proud to announce that Craig A Crowley, Chief Executive, has been appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) for services to Sport. This top accolade was awarded to UK Deaf Sport, of which Craig is the Chair of the Trustees, on June 17 in Her Majesty the Queen's 2006 Birthday Honours list.
UK Deaf Sport is a UK-wide voluntary organisation promoting deaf athletes in elite sport. The award recognizes Craig's pioneering work in this field, culminating in the setting up of the new Deaf Sport Body, increasing opportunities for Deaf athletes in the UK.
Craig has been involved in the strategic development of Deaf Sport for 15 years and has also been working for Deaf and Disability charities for over 20 years. His new role leading the team at Action Deafness has involved a complete transformation of the organisation over the last seven months.
Craig said: "I am deeply honoured to receive this award which is a great credit, not only to me but to the UK Deaf Sport's Board Officers, Trustees, staff and coordinators/volunteers, who have worked so hard and achieved so much in our field.
I have seen many changes in Deaf Sport and I am proud to have played a part in them. My involvement with UK Deaf Sport has been both rewarding and challenging. I am absolutely delighted our work has been recognised in this way."
Peter Carr, Chairman of Action Deafness' Board of Trustees commented: "It is such a great honour for Craig; he joined us in November 2005 and he has already created a strong, positive impact on Action Deafness.
