TCG Experience

Al Crowley was TCG's first employee; his first major assignment at TCG was also TCG's first contract.Al's primary focus is developing and improving the quality of the core code and libraries that are used in all the projects that TCG designs.He is responsible for architecture design and implementation best practices, for projects such as our Grants.gov integration work.Al has been involved in almost every TCG project in some fashion, and provides technical direction to the company as a whole.

Background and Education

Al did his undergraduate work at Villanova University, where he had a full Presidential Scholarship.He was graduated magna cum laude in 1994 with a degree from the Honors Program for Comprehensive Sciences as well as a degree in computer science.At the University of Pennsylvania he studied algorithms and computer networks and received a Master's degree in computer and information science in December, 1995.

Business Experience

Before joining TCG, Al was working in a mostly academic setting.At Villanova he worked on developing educational applications for use in classroom and student laboratory settings.At the University of Pennsylvania he was a Teachers Assistant for "Introduction to Computer Science."

Technical Experience

Al has been developing Web applications in J2EE, Perl and C++ for 8 years.In addition to Web development, he has worked on database design, image processing, and application server development.

He is co-designer of the open source SteelBlue Web application server.SteelBlue is written in C++ for both Unix and Windows.It connects natively to Oracle, MySQL, and mSQL databases and can connect to any ODBC data source on Windows NT.SteelBlue provides a Web application developer with automatic security features, client and server side data checking, and a strong framework for database access with business rule enforcement.

Special Interests

Al spends most of his free time keeping Gambit, a 110 pound Labrador Retriever, out of trouble.His home in Cape May County New Jersey is perfect for taking his wife and son to the Ocean City Boardwalk for fun, games, and ice cream.

Al spends most of the day at his home office keeping his dog Gambit, a 103 pound Labrador Retriever, out of trouble.On the occasional few hours a week when his wife Elizabeth, a third year Medical Resident, isn't working, they like to play table top games, watch movies and go to the beach (usually with Gambit).

Al works hard at being hip and trendy by undertaking a variety of unusual projects such as building a free standing home arcade machine, maintaining a classic car, and collecting "cool toys" of all kinds.

Al Crowley has over 10 years experience in computer and information technology.Before founding Blue Wire, Al served as the Chief Technical Officer for Turner Consulting Group, a Washington DC based business focused on government contracting.Turner was recognized by Inc.Magazine as one of the fastest growing privately-held companies in America during his tenure. At Turner, Al worked in the executive group responsible for charting the strategic direction of the company.In his capacity of Technical Lead he managed groups of programmers working on a number of projects with budgets ranging up to the one million dollar mark.While Al was on the Committee for Process Improvement, Turner was evaluated as a Capability Maturity Model (CMMI) Level 2 company.CMMI is a process developed at the Carnegie Mellon University to help software development companies accurately estimate the difficulty of software projects and complete them on time and budget.

Technical ExperienceAl has lead projects across a wide range of budgets using a wide range of technology.He has networking experience with both Windows and Linux systems as well as deploying secure Virtual Private Networks (VPN).In addition he has managed the purchase, deployment, and administration of Windows based workstations and Linux web, e-mail, and application servers.For custom programming, Al has experience developing desktop and web application in Java, C/C++, and Perl.
