Claiming the political wisdom of former Speaker of the House Tip O'Neil, who once quipped "all politics are local," North Carolina gay and lesbian conservatives are increasingly committed to influence local elections and statewide elections by supporting fair-minded Republicans, according to the Triangle chapter's founder, Adam Crowley.
"This year has seen North Carolina at the center of some very important gay and lesbian issues.We are hoping to show the voters that fair-minded Republicans are out there, and they need to be elected," Crowley remarked at the organizational meeting that took place last month in Raleigh.
Crowley, a native of Colorado and Texas, has been active in other Log Cabin chapters and has seen firsthand how influential gay and lesbian conservatives can be once they are organized.
"We are leaving our closets and heading for the voting booths this year.It is time for Republicans, gay and straight, to stop being intimidated on the left or the right by those who are beholden either to social liberalism or religious conservatism.Just because someone is Republican doesn't mean they don't appreciate or understand the issues involving our gay community," Crowley said.
"North Carolina has always been a conservative state, but never has the time been so ripe for all conservatives in the state regardless of sexual orientation to participate openly and actively in the political processes."
