"It's possible," Crowell told Kare11 News Friday, "that it will be re-reviewed, but the original review indicated that it was unlikely to survive Minnesota winters."

The DNR takes several steps to alleviate the problem , Wendy Crowell , Minnesota DNR Eurasian watermilfoil coordinator , said. The immediate solution is to use 2 , 4-D , an herbicide that kills broadleaf plants. The herbicide 2 , 4-D is the same that is used on dandelions. It is specific to broadleaf plants , so most native vegetation is not harmed when an area is treated. The herbicide goes to the root of milfoil and kills the plant and the root , which is necessary since milfoil is a perennial plant.

According to Crowell , the milfoil in North Twin Lake was localized to an access , so it was treated with 2 , 4-D.

A second solution is to place Floridone in the lake. This is used when milfoil is widespread in a lake. This is what had to be done with Ice Lake and McKinney Lake. Those two lakes were widely affected and had to be treated with Floridone.

Crowell said the milfoil in Ice Lake and McKinney Lake are nearly gone.

Crowell also said that Lake Ore-be-gone , the Gilbert pit mine , has Eurasian watermilfoil by the public water access. The milfoil in this lake was treated with an herbicide , but it is still in that lake and people should be careful to clean their boats , Crowell said.

Crowell also said if people think they have milfoil in an area lake , they should save a sample of the plant and bring it to an area fisheries office to be identified.

Milfoil can be recognized by its feather-like leaves in whorls of four around a center stem.

People can also send possible milfoil samples to Crowell for identification. Her address is Wendy Crowell , Milfoil Coordinator , Minnesota DNR , Ecological Service Box 25 , 500 Lafayette Road , St. Paul , MN 55155.
