JOHN CROWELL, a native of Watertown, became an editorial writer in 1997 after 21 years as a reporter and editor for the Republican-American.A graduate of Watertown High School and Eastern Connecticut State University, John was a reporter for seven years, covering Beacon Falls, Prospect and the Region 16 school district, the Litchfield Superior Court, Torrington and Litchfield County features.He became an assistant state news editor in 1983 and regional editor in charge of local news in 1989.In the five years as regional editor, the newspaper received three merit awards in the New England Newspaper Association&rsquos Newspaper of the Year contests.He was a contributing editor to the newspaper&rsquos investigation into corruption in Waterbury Mayor Joseph Santopietro&rsquos administration, continuing coverage that won the national Roy Howard Award for public service in 1991.He has won several other awards for writing and editing on stories as diverse as blizzards, prison riots and charity fund-raising.Back to the Top
