Ct. PGA gives Crowe its top honor

Crowe will accept the Connecticut Section of the PGA's highest honor at the year-ending meeting as he was selected as the section's Professional of the Year.

Crowe, 50, was selected as the section Professional of the Year, the highest honor paid to a PGA Professional, based on his outstanding leadership, exceptional performance as a golf professional, and distinguished service to the Section and the game of golf.

Crowe, is the 44th PGA Professional to be chosen to receive the award since 1952 when the Special Awards program first began.For the past 19 years, as the head professional at both the Rockledge Golf Club and Buena Vista Golf Course in West Hartford, Crowe has overseen two Town of West Hartford golf operations that are operated through the Department of Leisure Services.

Crowe was elected to PGA of America Membership in 1977, and in 2002, he achieved quarter century membership status.He began his career in golf at The Country Club of Farmington, where he worked under the tutelage of PGA Professional John Murphy for 12 years.He also served at the facility formerly known as Edgewood Golf Course and TPC of Connecticut, now the TPC at River Highlands.

"I did my entire apprenticeship under John Murphy and then was given a chance by Drew and Peter Pierson at Edgewood in Cromwell, which is now the TPC River Highlands," Crowe said.

Crowe, who lives in Berlin with his wife Sandy, has three children, Michelle, Jennifer and Michael.

"My wife and I got married in 1976, the same time I got my first head pro job," Crowe said."She knew about the golf business.She knew about all the hours during the summer months and all that came with the job.She has stood beside me through it all and always been there."

Michelle Crowe played soccer at Wheaton College and was a state champion her freshman year at Berlin High School.She will start her first year of teaching this week in Holliston, Mass.
