"The race was unique in that the top three teams constantly kept changing positions," said Kari Crowe, Attitash Bear Peak team member. "Usually one or two teams hold the lead throughout a race. We didn't know until the last 20 minutes that we were going to win." "There were four sections of the race. The first section began at 9 a.m. on Saturday and was a mountain bike climb up Hurricane Mountain -- one the steepest road climbs in New England," explained Crowe. The second leg began around 10:30 a.m. and was a four-hour paddle down a section of the Saco River and then across Kezar Lake. Then more mountain biking that finished around 7 p.m. followed by a 200-foot rappel down Little Bear Mountain. "The rappel was exciting because we overtook a team to move into first place. The final leg, which began around 9 p.m., was an approximately six-hour trek that climbed up the back of Sunday River, and finished at Barker Mountain Base Lodge. We finished the race at 4:05 in the morning, " said Crowe. The New England Adventure Race challenges team skills during hours of non-stop trekking, mountain biking, paddling, and navigating an unmarked course around Sunday River. Team Attitash Bear Peak is comprised of Kari Crowe, Plymouth; Sean Hartman, Cambridge, MA; and David Darby, Boston, MA.
