John David Crowe
John David Crowe graduated from Springhill High in 1954, where he was an All-Star and a Prep All-American football player, lettered in basketball and track.
After graduation, he played football at Texas A&M under Coach Paul "Bear" Bryant, where he won the 1957 Heisman Trophy.He is, both, the only Aggie player and Coach Bryant's only football player to win the Heisman Trophy.He helped the Aggies to a No. 1 ranking during the 1957 season.
John David was listed in "Who's Who" in American Colleges and Universities and earned Academic All-American honors in his senior year.He graduated in 1958 with a degree in Business Administration.
In 1958, he became the first round draft pick for the Chicago Cardinals.He continued to play football in the NFL for the next eleven years.He played with the Chicago Cardinals, the St. Louis Cardinals and the San Francisco 49ers.He went to the Pro-Bowl four times, had a pair of 1,000-yard rushing seasons and named to the All-Pro team of the 1960's as a halfback.
John David also coached for Bryant at Alabama and served as head coach and athletic director at NLU.In addition, he was an assistant coach for the Cleveland Browns and the San Diego Chargers.
Afterwards, John David returned to Texas A&M.He has been very instrumental in bringing about the endowment of several scholarships and funding of the athletic department overall.He served as an associate athletic director from 1983-1988.In 1988, he was named Athletic Director at Texas A&M and remained in that position for four and one half years.He is credited with moving A&M to the forefront of collegiate athletics, especially in the area of gender equity.He resigned his position to devote more time to a business partnership with Coach Bryant's son.
He has been the Director of Athletic Development at Texas A&M for more than five years.
