Mr. Crowder moved to Manchester in 1930, attended City School and Central High School, where he graduated with the class of 1935. During WWII, he served with the U.S. Army for 42 months and was honorably discharged with the rank of Staff Sergeant. He graduated from McKenzie Business College in Chattanooga and accepted employment with the Arrow Shirt Company in Atlanta. He retired as a purchasing agent in 1982 following 32 years of service. During his tenure with Arrow, he also lived in Minnesota and Pennsylvania. Most of his career was spent in Lewistown, PA where he was active in civic work and public service. A lifetime member of the Benovolent and Protective Order of Elks, Mr. Crowder is credited with authoring a cermony ritual for the presentation of an American flag to each Boy Scout who attains the rank of Eagle Scout. he presented more than 300 flags to Eagle Scouts in central PA and the Grand Lodge of B.P.O. E. adopted the ceremony for use nationally. In retirement, he returned to Manchester where he was active in Rotary Club and the Bible Correspondence Course at Main Street Church of Christ.
