"Typically, trucks are used by more than one driver and the seats are constantly being readjusted," says Jim Crowcroft, manager of product planning, Sterling Truck Corp. and Western Star Truck Corp., Willoughby, OH. "Now, drivers can easily find their position with the memory seat function."
At Kenworth, Kirkland, WA, many of the ergonomic enhancements and creature comforts found in the 2002 trucks were developed from suggestions and recommendations from fleet customers and members of the Kenworth Drivers' Board, which is comprised of 180 operators including drivers who are non-Kenworth truck users.
To enhance driver ergonomics and convenience, Kenworth's new interior design features a "jet cockpit-like" wrap-around instrument panel with easy-to-reach locations for an AM/FM radio and rotary controls for the heater/ventilation/air conditioning (HVAC) system.
"The wrap-around dash feature provides better visibility of the gauges and easier access to the switches. We changed the toe-board angle of the throttle pedal slightly to improve the ergonomics.

Crowcroft of Sterling and Western Star agrees.
"Brake-by-wire is now an emerging technology. It's widely used in Europe, but the regulations in the United States is one of the last great hurdles for this technology," Crowcroft says. "The result is that trucks will have better stopping performance and braking distances. The drivers will have a better brake feel. Drivers with less experience will improve their ability to operate the vehicle."
In future design, security will be a hot issue.
