ASHLAND -- Preston Crow has never served on a town committee or board, but, he said, he is a year wiser to the town's political landscape.
Crow, 35, recently took out nomination papers for a five-year term on the Planning Board. He said his run for selectmen last year prepared him well for a board bid this year.
"When I ran for selectmen last year, I learned an awful lot of the town in the process. I'm glad I did it," said Crow, a software engineer for Hopkinton-based EMC.

In talking to residents while campaigning for selectman, Crow said he heard two main concerns -- finances and development. So, he said, the Planning Board was the next logical step for him.
Crow said he is researching some of the recent developments. Some residents told him they thought some projects needed a more thorough review, but he declined to be more specific.
He said he understands much of the Planning Board's work is and must be based on fitting a developer's plans into local zoning regulations. Crow hopes the board will be more cognizant of its vision for the whole town, perhaps tied to the master plan, a project just getting off the ground.

Crow said a five-year commitment to the board made him "think twice," but he is committed to stay in the area for the time being.
Crow, who has lived in town with his wife, Catherine, for six years, said he plans to go door-to-door on Saturday collecting signatures for his nomination papers. He did the same this last year.
"I found it's very effective, getting to talk to people. Some want to talk about the issues, and some do not," said Crow. "It's one of best aspects of running for office -- getting out and meeting people."
Crow told the Daily News last year he had thought about running for selectman for some time and he had decided "to stop talking about it" and run. He had said he would like to help create a sense of community. -

Finance Committee Chairman Adam Shuster and political newcomer Preston Crow yesterday took out nomination papers for May's election.

Crow, 34, is a software developer for Hopkinton-based EMC. He said he has thought about running for selectman for some time and decided this year "to stop talking about it" and run.
When asked why he wanted to serve on the board, Crow said he would like to help create "a sense of community," as much as anything.
"Too much, people live in town, work in another town, shop in a third town, and there's no sense of community," he said.
Crow, who is married and has lived in town for five years, also wants to aid the town in controlling its growth.
To get on the May 4 ballot, candidates must gather 55 signatures from registered voters and get them back to the clerk's office by March 16.
Besides Crow and Shuster, Desmarais has also taken out papers for selectman and intends to run.
