Irony paraded down the hallowed halls of the U.S. Army War College as Patrick Crow walked in the footsteps of George Washington , Dwight Eisenhower and George Patton last month.
    ...
Their leaders are career people , so they don't understand what civilian life is like , said Crow , a dentist for 21 years.

Since 1954 , the War College has capped off its 10-month academic program by inviting leading citizens from across the United States to discuss national security issues with its students in a weeklong seminar. Five nationally prominent speakers lead the discussions on international , domestic , defense and economic issues.

Crow , a 1970 Decatur High graduate , was one of 160 business , government , media and academic leaders from across the country to participate. There were 264 officers in the 2001 class. Past graduates include President Eisenhower , 1928 ; Gen.

Crow's name got on the list from an Army dentist who serves with Crow on the nine-member board of directors of the American Board of General Dentistry. Crow is a past president.

    Renewed respect

While attending Samford University , Crow registered for ROTC as an elective because he thought it would be an easy course. He dropped out after one day.

I never realized it was so involved , he said.

But that learning experience paled significantly to the five days spent at America's second-oldest military institution. Only West Point is older. George Washington once reviewed the troops there when it served as an early American fort.

I've always had a lot of respect for the military. But I have a renewed respect for the caliber of people that are leaders in our military , Crow said.
    ...
Crow described the discussions as very open.. There's no pressure to speak or not to speak. The military has as much interest in our viewpoints as we had in theirs..

Overall , however , Crow said he learned more than he shared with the students , and he kept a dairy of his experience.

    Danger ahead

When asked what he learned of the world , Crow said that international peace requires constant sacrifice , patience and farsighted planning.

This world is a dangerous place , he said.
