   The father of a softball player who allegedly assaulted Sacred Heart Academy softball coach John Crovo has been placed on indefinite administrative leave from his job as an art and photography teacher at Notre Dame High in West Haven.

   Picard's daughter Melanie, a senior first baseman at Sacred Heart, was one of two players who had been suspended for three games by Crovo, 54, after missing Friday's game against West Haven so she could attend the North Haven High prom.

   Crovo, who did not return messages from the Register on Wednesday, said on Tuesday that "he (Picard) wanted to know if his kid could play (Wednesday) and I said I didn't want him here and I told him to take her home, and I turned around and walked away."

   Witnesses said that was when Picard picked up a bat, struck Crovo on the back of the head and continued striking Crovo.

   Picard's daughters, Melanie and Michelle, who also played for Crovo at Sacred Heart, were credited by witnesses for getting their father to end the attack on Crovo.
   
   Crovo, who is also the director of information and technology for the Clinton public schools, was released Tuesday from Yale-New Haven Hospital after being treated for head, chest and leg injuries.
   
   "I took a big-time beating," Crovo told the Register on Tuesday. "He was swinging for the fences.

   Picard, 48, of North Branford, received a suspended five-year sentence from Superior Court Judge Nicola E. Rubinow on Wednesday for his attack 17 months ago on former Sacred Heart Academy softball coach John Crovo.

   Crovo suffered head, chest and leg injuries. He has suffered partial permanent hearing loss.
   
   Picard, who has reached an undisclosed civil settlement with Crovo, must keep a clean record for the five years of his probation.
