Tina Crouse, a public affairs officer with the Department of National Defence, confirmed last week the building would be torn down before the land it is situated on is sold.

"The parcel is going to be sold as a whole," she explained. "The armory building is going to be demolished and the contamination on the site is going to be remediated before it's offered up for sale.

"But the new garage that was built there is going to be left, so whoever purchases the land can take that over."

Crouse said there is no clear indication at this point when the demolition will begin, but she said she suspects the work will begin this summer. She said it's also difficult to estimate the length of time it will take to clean up the site.

"Weir will be engaged to work specifically on the weapons handling and the discharge system," said Tina Crouse, a spokesperson for Department of National Defence public affairs in Ottawa.

BAE Systems Projects Canada and Victoria Shipyard Ltd. currently have a contract for other work being conducted on the Victoria. The work includes project management, engineering advice and work on the sub's hydraulics, steering gear and other areas.

The Victoria is in drydock at the Fleet Maintenance Facility at CFB Esquimalt and undergoing what's referred to as an "extended docking work period."

"That's a regular part of her maintenance cycle," Crouse said.

The Victoria is expected to be ready for sea trials by mid-2008 "just before she goes back into action", she said. The sub should be ready to go back into service in 2009.

Weir Canada and BAE Systems Projects Canada are also competing for a long-term $1.5 billion maintenance contract for all four of the navy's subs. The contract, which would essentially be an extension of work currently being undertaken by BAE, is for five years with an option for another 10 years worth of contracts, Crouse said.
