David Croughan, chief economist at Irish Business Employers Confederation, believes economic growth will slow to just over 2 per cent this year. He said the implications of job losses in construction could be seen in other areas.

‘‘Retail figures out this week show a slowdown in sales of furniture, electrical goods and hardware - all housing related.

‘‘I think we will still have a significant fallout in jobs in that industry. I would say around 10,000 to 15,000 have already been lost, but the same number are likely to go in the near future. I think employment growth will fall to around 0.5 per cent this year. None of us can be sure what the fallout from the sub-prime global credit crunch will be, or the cost of the ramifications, " Croughan said.
