   Working with Christine Crough of Alternatives, she developed transition workshops to help parents plan for the transition from the education program (which ends in the schools at age 21) into life in the broader community for the developmentally disabled. She found funding through a family foundation called the Comart Foundation. Drawing on her 28 years of work in the social services field (with the city of Peterborough and as a counsellor at Sir Sandford Fleming College) she drew on these resources in setting up the Heads Up for Inclusion program.

   When Christine Crough, a community service worker at Alternatives Community Services, was looking for a work placement for Laura, she had access to the stories about Laura. They enhanced her own understanding and she was also able to use them as a tool to introduce Laura to the community. The stories were included in Laura's portfolio. When Laura began her work placement at Jake's Restaurant, her employer and co-workers had an opportunity to look through them as well.
