Rosalie Crouch, Ph.D., professor of ophthalmology, has been granted a $65,000 Senior Investigator Award by Research to Prevent Blindness (RPB).

The award supports nationally recognized senior scientists conducting eye research at medical institutions in the United States.Crouch is one of 122 scientists at 50 institutions so honored since the award was established in 1987.

Crouch's research explores the role of vitamin A, long known to be critical for vision.Lack of vitamin A can be due to dietary deficiency. However, in developed countries, the lack of availability of this vitamin to the visual system is usually related to a problem with one of the many enzymes of proteins that metabolize and transport this critical compound.Crouch's research is targeted to understanding the mechanisms underlying the lack of adequate levels of vitamin A in the visual system and exploring means to correct this dysfunction.
