Jane Crouch (Coarsegold)
Jane has been a member of the "Behind the Scenes" SPICE volunteers since 2000. This group makes journals out of cereal boxes to be given to school children. She was selected to serve as SPICE Coordinator in 2004 when the former coordinator moved away. She supervises a two-hour weekly class that makes this specialty item. She calls them "The cut and paste club."
Her responsibilities include: Shopping for supplies such as glue sticks, construction paper, wide clear tape, keeping records of costs and collecting cereal boxes from different sources. Jane subscribes to several bird and animal magazines and donates them to the group to cut out the pictures and use them to decorate the journal covers. Also, when the journals are completed, Jane does art work on the covers which adds a special touch of beauty to them. Then, she drives from SKP Park Sierra (located off Highway 41 south of Coarsegold) to Oakhurst and delivers these treasures to the SPICE Director who distributes them to each school in the mountain area. Since 1998 these behind-the-scenes volunteers have made a total of 10,896 journals!
Jane enjoys working with such a dedicated group of volunteers who want to give back to their community. Occasionally they are invited to visit classrooms and present the journals to the teachers as it is a special treat to see the reaction of the students when they are given one of these special gifts to keep. The teachers use them as teaching tools, special occasion gifts and to jot down their creative expressions.
Jane retired from Loma Linda University Medical Center as a medical transcriptionist in radiology. She and her husband Al joined the Escape RV club in 1997. They moved from Southern California into this area in October of 2002. Jane volunteers on several committees at SKP Park, such as: Library, clubhouse landscaping, and clubhouse cleaning. At Christmas time she also joins other ladies who make cookies for our local firemen.
As a result of the above comments about Jane we are confident every student who has received a journal truly would say "Mrs. Crouch is indeed an 'Angel Amongst Us.' "
