Bill Crouch, president of a local health-care consulting service, said people might have to travel for more than an hour to get megavoltage therapy in places like the southern part of the state. So the new standards, if approved, may allow for one or two more units in West Virginia.
"But in looking at the standards, I don't see a significant increase in the number of units in West Virginia," said Crouch, of Bill J. Crouch and Associates Inc. "We may not see any more units in West Virginia."
The draft standards also mandate that the doctor, radiation oncologist and support personnel be at the site when a person is treated.
There are operational MRT units in the state at Bluefield, Beckley, Lewisburg, Huntington, Charleston, South Charleston, Parkersburg, Clarksburg, Wheeling, Morgantown and Martinsburg.
