STATESVILLE - Colonel Ben F. Crouch, (Lt. Col. USAF Ret.), 75, of 860 Wendover Road died after a lengthy illness Sunday, March 3, 2002. He was born in Stony Point on Sept. 9, 1926. He was the son of the late Dr. Thomas Dalton Crouch and Louise Summers Crouch. He was preceded in death by his brother, Thomas Dalton Crouch Jr. Colonel Crouch retired from the U.S. Air Force in June 1969 after 24 years of service as a combat pilot. He saw extensive service during the Korean War and was an active participant during the Cold War. For service to his country, Colonel Crouch was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Air Medal with three oak leaf clusters and the Air Force Commendation Medal. After his retirement from the Air Force, Colonel Crouch worked in the private sector utilizing his degree from the University of Texas in industrial management. A member of New Salem Presbyterian Church, Colonel Crouch served its congregation and his Lord as an elder of the church. He is survived by his wife, Janette Proctor Crouch of the home; two sons, Scott T. Crouch of Hickory and Casey V. Crouch of Cornelius; a stepson, Martin (Terry) Penn of Victorville, Calif.; a granddaughter, Jennifer N. Crouch of Statesville; a sister-in-law, Bettye Proctor of Valdosta, Ga.; two sister, Ruth G. Crouch of Winston-Salem and Katherine Crouch Sledge of Whiteville; two nieces, Elizabeth Sledge Magenbauer of Salem, Va., and Katherine Sledge Fort of Whiteville, and a nephew, Glenn Sledge of Fayetteville. -
