    Barth brings 33 years of working in bird conservation to the PLJV.He joined the Joint Venture staff in May 2008 after serving on the PLJV Board of Directors from 1997 through 2008.Prior to working for the PLJV, he was a regional wildlife biologist for Pheasants Forever, Inc. (PF) for 18 years.While with PF, Barth worked with volunteers and natural resources agencies in Montana, Wyoming, Utah, Colorado, Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas.Before PF, Barth worked as a conservation officer and an assistant regional supervisor for the South Dakota Department of Game, Fish and Parks from 1975 to 1990.He graduated from the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology with a bachelor's degree in geological engineering in 1970.He then joined the U.S. Air Force, successfully attended their Officer Training School (distinguished graduate), and served as a missile launch officer until 1973.He then earned a bachelor's degree in wildlife and fisheries sciences from South Dakota State University in 1975.During his career in wildlife conservation, he helped start the Kansas Association for Wetlands and Streams, a non-profit devoted to conserving, restoring and protecting the wetlands and riparian areas of Kansas.He was recognized by the Environmental Law Institute in 2005 as their National Wetlands Award Co-Winner in the Wetland Community Leader category.

    St. Paul, Minn. - March 30, 2005 - Barth Crouch, Pheasants Forever's regional wildlife biologist for Kansas, has been named the Wetlands Community Leader as part of the National Wetlands Awards presented by the Environmental Law Institute.

    Pheasants Forever would like to congratulate Barth, "The Cowboy", for his hard work and dedication.

    Pheasants Forever's (PF) Barth Crouch has been named the Wetland Community Leader by the Environmental Law Institute as a part of their 2005 National Wetlands Awards.The award recognizes Crouch's leadership in the conservation of Kansas' wetlands.Crouch will receive the award and be honored at a Capitol Hill presentation on May 18th in Washington D.C.

    The National Wetlands Awards Program celebrates individuals who have demonstrated extraordinary dedication, innovation, or excellence in wetlands conservation.Overall, there will be seven people recognized as part of the awards program.Crouch is the first PF staffer to be recognized by the program that is co-sponsored by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, USDA Forest Service, USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service, Federal Highway Administration, and NOAA Fisheries.

    Crouch was recognized with the Wetlands Community Leader award for his work in promoting wetlands in Kansas.He is the secretary/treasurer and co-founder of the Kansas Alliance for Wetlands and Streams (KAWS) as well as a board member and vice-chairman for Playa Lakes Joint Venture (PLJV).Over the years, Crouch has continuously challenged the KAWS and PLJV to expand the scope of their mission and impact on playas.Recently, Crouch spearheaded a successful effort to get a new federal program practice approved that will have long-term benefits for playa lakes and other non-floodplain wetlands.

    Crouch currently serves as PF's regional wildlife biologist for Kansas.Crouch joined PF in 1990 servicing PF chapters in Colorado, Wyoming, Utah, and Montana.In Colorado, he helped PF to forge a partnership with the Colorado Division of Wildlife known as Pheasant Habitat Improvement Program (PHIP).PHIP's habitat cornerstone is the planting of plum thickets for winter shelter belts.These thicket plantings have been extremely beneficial for Colorado's wildlife.He currently works with PF's 37 Kansas chapters, helping them raise and expend funds to improve wildlife habitat in Kansas.Barth is also an active part of PF's Washington D.C. efforts in support of the conservation component of the Federal Farm Bill.

    Crouch is a Wall, South Dakota native.He received a B.S. from South Dakota State University in wildlife and fisheries sciences.Prior to joining PF, Barth worked for the South Dakota Game, Fish, and Parks Department as an assistant regional supervisor out of Mobridge for 15 years.He currently makes his home in Salina, Kansas with his wife Sue, son Casey, and daughter Jessica.
