Two local teachers, John Crotty, an AP calculus teacher at Hill Regional Career High School in New Haven, and Fred Djang, who teaches AP statistics and calculus at Choate Rosemary Hall in Wallingford, also were honored for their efforts to encourage students to participate in AP programs.

Crotty, a 33-year teacher, was recognized in the underrepresented minority category, for teaching a large proportion of minority students.
Crotty began the AP calculus program at Career in 1992, inspired partly by the movie "Stand and Deliver," featuring a math teacher who taught calculus to inner-city kids in Los Angeles. Many of Crotty's students have gone on to Ivy League schools.
"Success in calculus can help a kid believe in himself," said Crotty.
Crotty and Djang will be recognized at a ceremony at MIT on Nov. 15. -
