TALLAHASSEE -- On July 13, John Crotty plunked down $7,743.60 to run for governor of Florida.

Crotty is one of five dark-horse candidates, three Democrats and two Republicans, who will appear on the Sept. 5 primary ballot. Each has paid the state qualifying fee by lending money to his or her campaign. They've collected few if any contributions, while the leading contenders in each primary have raised millions.
"It's been challenging to get the message out," Crotty admits.

Rod Smith are the leading contenders in the Democratic primary, Democratic voters will also have the option to choose Crotty, treasurer of the Orange County Soil & Water Conservation District, Panama City vitamin salesman Glenn Burkett or "Grandma" Carol Castagnero, a retired teacher from Lakeland.

Concerned that the election would focus on negative campaigning and provide voters little detail on the issues, Crotty decided to get into the race to focus attention on growth management, state finances, water conservation and education.
"Property insurance has grabbed a lot of headlines but as far as dealing with the state's long-term ability to handle Medicaid expenses or water or growth management, I don't see much more than sound bites," he said.
Although the state budget has benefited from large surpluses the past two years, he pointed to recent studies that show the state's finances will tighten over the next several years while expenses will continue to grow.
"We need to look out 10 years. The major candidates have done nothing to address that," he said.
