SEGUIN - On the day he graduated from Abilene Christian University, A. Marcus Nelson's mom handed him the essay he wrote on the first day of school in fourth grade that outlined what he wanted to be when he grew up - a school principal and a rap star.

The paper earned him a 71 and a teacher's note that he "needs to elaborate."

It was a long, hard road for the son of a single mother, raised in the projects in San Antonio to that day he graduated college.Monday, he told his story to a few hundred people in Jackson Auditorium on the Texas Lutheran University campus as part of Seguin's Martin Luther King Day celebration.

"Four words sum up my message to you today: Hard work pays off," Nelson, deputy superintendent of curriculum and instruction for the Judson Independent School District, told the crowd.

On his way to Judson, he was a school principal in Pflugerville, where he helped drastically reduce the dropout rate and increase the school's state academic rating from "Acceptable" to "Recognized."

On his first day as principal, he called an assembly and told the students: "One thing we all have in common is that we all have dreams, and every day you walk out of this school you should be a little closer to your dream."

Nelson kept the crowd laughing with his story of overcoming the odds to achieve his dream of becoming a principal. And he's still working on becoming a rap star, busting out some rhymes for the audience as well.
