   No one was injured, Assistant Chief Rhett Croteau of the Malta Ridge Fire Department said.

   Croteau said Malta Avenue was cloaked in heavy smoke by the time he got there. The entire front of the building was aflame as was the upstairs, Croteau said.
   
   "I would say it took us 45 minutes (to get flames under control)," he said. "Everybody worked hard."

   Malta and Ballston Spa firefighters had trouble fighting the smoke to the building's north, Croteau said. Volunteers from Round Lake and Jonesville in Clifton Park were able to attack from the south, he said.
   
   The Arvin Hart Fire Co. from Stillwater also participated.
   
   Fire tankers brought water to the scene because the nearest hydrants are in the village of Ballston Spa, two miles west, or at an intersection 11Ú2 miles south.

   Croteau remarked that Bowman donated dozens of cider doughnuts for the fire department's auxiliary breakfast this past Sunday.
