TRENTON , A state representative for the past six years and the current assistant minority leader in the state House of Representatives, Bob Crosthwaite, an Ellsworth Republican who represents Trenton announced Tuesday that he will not seek re-election in November.

He said his decision not to seek a fourth term is based on personal reasons, adding that he wants to devote more time to his family and his ministry.

"Our ministry's growing, and my wife and I are embarking on a new business interest," he said. "I need to give it more time and energy."

Mr. Crosthwaite and his wife, Barbara, raised two sons and have two grandchildren. He and his son Todd are co-pastors of the Faith Community Fellowship in Ellsworth.

Mr. Crosthwaite works for Yesterday's Children in addition to serving some 230 people through his ministry.

A native of Canada, Mr. Crosthwaite has lived in the United States for 23 years. He became a U.S. citizen 16 years ago. In addition to his six-year tenure in the Maine House of Representatives, he served eight years on the Ellsworth City Council.

An active member of the Republican Party, Mr. Crosthwaite said he has talked with party leaders at the county and state level about possible candidates for the District 38 seat he is vacating. He said no one has committed to a run for the House district that includes Ellsworth, Otis and Trenton, but a candidate would be announced soon.

Among his accomplishments in the Legislature, Mr. Crosthwaite says he is most proud of his work in support of the developmentally disabled in Maine. Last year, the Maine Association of Community Providers honored Mr. Crosthwaite with an award for his advocacy on behalf of the developmental disability population in Maine.

Mr. Crosthwaite is stepping down from the Legislature to spend more time with his family, but devoting time to family members is nothing new for him.

With the exception of only a day or two, his wife traveled with him whenever he was in Augusta over the past six years.

Mr. Crosthwaite, 61, said his energy level for the work in Augusta is great, but the commute has lost its appeal.

"I like being there when we're in session and busy," he said.

Mr. Crosthwaite said he also is proud of the work he did early in his legislative career to help protect Branch Lake as a drinking water supply in Ellsworth.

Will his retirement from public office be permanent?

"I'll leave the door open," said Mr. Crosthwaite, "but I have no plans now."
