Tony Crosson, a 63-year-old electrician, hasn't run at Franklin Field since he was a student at West Philadelphia's Lee Elementary School.
Though he never competed again in the Relays at Franklin Field, Crosson still runs around the annual three-day international track and field event, and has so for nearly 50 years as an integral behind-the-scenes part of the Relays.
For Crosson - dubbed the "conductor of electricity" by the late Jim Tuppeny, the longtime Penn Relays meet director - is a member of Tony Overend's 40-person Franklin Field operations team that will spring into action when the meet opens Thursday.
Overend's team is charged with keeping the Relays running - and succeeds, at least most of the time, said Crosson, a Relays fixture who has grown from electrician's helper to apprentice to journeyman over 46 years of service at Penn.

Fortunately, Crosson and fellow university electricians got things back up and running without losing too much time in this time-conscious track and field carnival.
...
"I'd usually hear it 100 times: 'Would the conductor of electricity please report to ... ' " Crosson said.
...
"We have to fly all the TV wires over the stadium because we don't have any underground wires," Crosson said. "We try to do it so they look nice and don't get in the way of people's views."
Crosson, for sure, has enjoyed one of the best views of all while serving under three meet directors - Tuppeny, Tim Baker and now Dave Johnson.
...
"They all have different personalities," Crosson said, "but Tuppeny was special. -
