   The first five minutes of ABC's new drama , Gideon's Crossing , is actually very compelling. It focuses primarily on Dr. Ben Gideon ( Andre Braugher ) and a new terminal cancer patient who is a bigoted , angry bulldog who offends by just opening his mouth to breathe. The striking difference between these two strong men makes for a gripping teaser to this series about a teaching hospital.
   
   The rest of the show is more of a hodgepodge of similarly compelling moments , morbid humor , and messy dialogue and story components.

   Another supposedly amusing story in Gideon's Crossing is about a young man who keeps pretending that there is something wrong with him because he needs a place to perform as an actor. He fakes numerous ailments until they finally catch onto the ruse. However , this person is actually mentally disturbed. He has done this in other hospitals and should be sent to a psychiatric hospital– normal procedure in a case such as his. But the resident doesn't want to get into trouble with Gideon , so he hides the facts and releases the young man , giving him the old woman's dog ( since she's dead ) to make him feel good. Hello. Are we on Fantasy Island Hospital here.
   
   All this incompetence has given me a headache , and I'm going to take two aspirins and call any doctors but these if symptoms persist.
