At this point I was approached by Kerrie Crossie (the unit manager of our S.S.D.) and I was asked if I would be interested in enrolling in the Sterilisation Technology course through O.T.E.N. My first reaction was that I would not be capable of doing the course as I did not work in a sterilising department, and that it would be far too difficult for me. But I think in hindsight Kerrie has a good perception of a person#146s ability and she persisted in asking me, until I agreed to apply to do the course.
After receiving my subject material from O.T.E.N. I turned to my first unit of Microbiology and thought to myself, #147what have I got myself into here?#148 it was like learning a new language, I could not even pronounce the words, let alone remember how to spell them, but I persevered and eventually finished my first assignment and sent it off to O.T.E.N. along with a letter of introduction to my Microbiology teacher. My biggest concern was still the fact that I did not work in a sterilising department and I explained this fear in my letter of introduction
When I received my first assignment back from O.T.E.N.

In doing my practicum I cannot thank Kerrie Crossie and her hard working staff enough. They never, ever, refused to help me in any way whatsoever. They were patient enough to show me over and over again until I got things right, and they answered my many thousands of questions without being annoyed at the fact that I was getting to the stage of being pedantic in everything I asked.
So in conclusion, I would just like to say that the reason being awarded the Sam Passfield Memorial Award by your association, and the N.S.W. T.A.F.E State Medal means so much to me, is that I finally feel that I have once again found confidence in my own ability, but more importantly I have regained faith in the education system thanks to so many wonderful and caring people.
I would greatly appreciate it, if you could pass my thanks on to your association Lorraine, and I would like to say it was a pleasure meeting you at the O.T.E.N. graduation and awards evening.
