Wendy Cross Program Director
Wendy became involved with NextAid in 2006, leaving a career in TV commercial production for the more meaningful experiences of humanitarian work. She spent a year living on-site in Dennilton, South Africa volunteering as project manager. In this role, Wendy supervised the early construction phase and helped build the capacity of our partner organization's management team in administration systems, technology, and fundraising. Since her return to the states in March 2007, she has taken on the role of Program Director and is focusing efforts on fundraising, developing future small-scale youth led projects in other African countries, as well as continuing to liaise on the YWAV Center. She holds a Bachelor's degree in Film and Television Production from Chapman University and is currently completing a master's degree in Sustainable Development at the SIT Graduate Institute in Vermont. -

WENDY CROSS Wendy Cross, as a teenager had the dream to volunteer and live in Africa one day. She was fortunate to be raised in Hawaii by an adventurous family, where world travel was emphasized as a valuable learning experience. Favorite travels include 5 weeks of camping through Mexico, Belize and Guatemala with her parents and three sisters at age 14 and studying abroad in France. After graduating from Chapman University in Southern California with a major in Film and Television Production, Wendy began working towards making the Africa dream a reality. For three years she saved money aside from her job at a commercial production company in Hollywood with the goal of saving enough to go abroad. She was introduced to NextAid and Lauren through a fellow documentary filmmaker and arrived in Dennilton in March 2006 with the commitment to stay for a year as our volunteer project coordinator. Wendy will be living on the project site with Cynthia, Jabu, and the nine children to work as a liaison between NextAid and Youth With A Vision, facilitating the construction progress and administrative duties.
She also hopes to use her background in film to teach the youth videomaking skills to enable creative and entertaining outlets to teach about HIV/AIDS and other community problems through media. Her new South African family has given her the Zulu name "Sithandiwe," which means "we are loved by many" and she truly feels loved and welcomed by the Dennilton community. Wendy is motivated by the progress of NextAid's center, the dedication of the YWAV volunteers, and the massive need by the community for the services that will be developed here. -
