New elementary school to be named for Virginia Cross

    Posted Wednesday, March 29, 2006

Siler City, NC - The Chatham County Board of Education, during a meeting on Monday, March 28, voted to name the new elementary school being built in Siler City in honor of Virginia Cross, a longtime Siler City educator who still lives in the town. Following the meeting a group of Board members, central office staff, and Siler City Elementary Principal Angie Brady-Andrew visited Mrs. Cross to share the news with her.

Cross spent her entire teaching career as a third grade teacher in Chatham County Schools. After graduating from Meredith College in 1941, she began teaching at Moncure School, where she lived in the teacherage. After two years, Cross moved to Paul Braxton School in Siler City where she continued to teach third grade. In 1977 students moved into a new elementary school. Cross was a part of the move and taught at Siler City Elementary School until her retirement in June of 1993. Not one to be away from education for long, Cross returned to the school as a reading volunteer until health issues forced her to stop for a time.

On Tuesday morning, Cross talked about how the tribute is overwhelming to her. She noted that it pleases her most that she is being able to honor her parents and the values they instilled in her and her siblings by their own example.

"It's been a good journey. I won't forget it and I'd like to continue when I can. It's my life," said Cross.

Virginia Cross herself, according to her many admirers at the celebration, has embodied dedication throughout her life. She taught third graders at Siler City Elementary School for 52 years and is now, though retired, working as a tutor at the school named in her honor.

The program began in front of the new building with a surprise. Principal Julie Vandiver, after welcoming the crowd, unveiled a large photographic portrait showing Cross engaged in conversation with three students.

The portrait will hang permanently at the school, while Cross will keep a smaller version of her own at home.
    ...
Rev. Jim Wall, Pastor of Siler City First Baptist Church, which Cross attends, gave the invocation, saying that so many people being present testified to their love and appreciation of Cross and the many others who contributed to creating the school.
