    Crichton looks elsewhere

    April 30, 2004 09:33

Paul Crichton will be looking to extend his 18-year professional career when he leaves Norwich City at the end of the season.

Robert Green's loyal understudy was told yesterday that his contract would not be renewed and immediately set his sights on finding a new club during the summer.

"I want to carry on playing for as long as I can," said the much travelled 35-year-old stopper, who made his league debut way back in the 1986-7 campaign.

"I'm only 35, which is no age for a keeper.I will speak to my agent this week and see what happens."

Crichton joined the Canaries from Burnley in the summer of 2001, with Nigel Worthington paying £150,000 for his services.
    ...
Crichton stepped in for three games midway through the 2001-2 season when Green suffered a temporary dip in form, and made three more appearances when his colleague was injured a few weeks later.
    ...
After spending two years keeping the bench warm, and playing for the reserves, Crichton wasn't exactly knocked off his feet when he was told his contract wasn't going to be renewed.

"It wasn't a big surprise to be released, to be honest, because I haven't played many games," said Crichton.
    ...
Manager Nigel Worthington thanked Crichton for his efforts, saying: "Paul has been a popular part of the squad and, apart from his first-team appearances, has been very much an important contributor to the team spirit at the club."
