Decatur fire department awarded funds for truck - [Cached Version]

The department has been awarded $198,000 for a new pumper truck after getting $89,000 last year for firefighting equipment, said Gene Cox, assistant fire chief.

Several fire engine companies are planning to meet with fire officials to show what type of firetrucks are available, he said.It could take 10 to 12 months to get the new fire engine, the first one the department has ever had, Cox said.

"There's a chance we could get a demo model," he said.
    ...
"This will mean we can respond more efficiently to fire calls," Cox said."It shows the fire department is moving forward. We're trying to get more volunteers and more training."

The grant requires a $9,900 local match which hopefully will be coming from the Decatur Township Trustees, Cox said. The department only gets $2,018 a year through its fire levy, he said.

Decatur is talking with Washington Township officials about providing fire coverage to that township, too, Cox said."We hope to get a contract with them.We could try to set up a satellite fire station in Washington Township," he said.

The new firetruck is desperately needed, Cox said. The department has three trucks in service, but none are in really good shape, he said.

"We went out on a run and one of the trucks had to turn back when it was stuck in third gear," he said."You need to have confidence you can leave the station and get to a fire," Cox said.

The department has about a dozen volunteer firefighters, he said.

Gratitude enough payment for Decatur department - [Cached Version]

"She said to be a volunteer was even more special because you don't get anything other than the satisfaction of knowing that you helped your fellow man," said Gene Cox, assistant chief of the Decatur Fire Department.
    ...
To Cox, another reward of being on the department is knowing he did a good job.

"You know you did the best you do with what you've been given," he said.

Cox began volunteering for the department because he wanted to help people in some way.

"The fire department is a way of being a good neighbor," he said."You get a special feeling whenever you help someone. Most people want to be a good human being to their fellow human beings. The greatest thing a person can be willing to do is sacrifice their life to try to save somebody else. You never know when you may have to do something like that."

Cox said most of his fellow firefighters feel the same way.

"The majority of the people who sit in a room like that are there for the same reason -- because they like being a friend and to help people," he said.
    ...
"Our fire department getting a vehicle off that grant really enhances the community, but it also enhances the county," Cox said."It enhances all other communities due to mutual aid.It makes it beneficial to everyone in this surrounding area."

The Decatur firefighters are trying to help the county in other ways, also.

In order to raise additional money for the area fire departments, Cox is hoping to convince the county commissioners to impose a 25 cent user fee on all utility bills throughout Lawrence County.

That money could then evenly be divided among the fire departments.

"I think that it would be highly beneficial to departments like ours that don't have the resources here," Cox said."The larger departments that have decent incomes already would get a piece of this already and it would beef up their income. It helps everybody. It would be a reliable income for the fire departments."

An additional bonus to the user fee is that renters would have to pay the fee, not only property owners, Cox said.

"One of the things you hear the public gripe about when you try to pass a tax levee is 'Well, I own property. There are renters that don't have to pay,'" he said."This wouldn't put the burden on just property owners.Everybody has to pay."

Any amount of money would help the department.

"If we had $10,000 a year coming in here, it would be tremendous what we can do here," Cox said.
