The department has been awarded $198,000 for a new pumper truck after getting $89,000 last year for firefighting equipment, said Gene Cox, assistant fire chief.
Several fire engine companies are planning to meet with fire officials to show what type of firetrucks are available, he said.It could take 10 to 12 months to get the new fire engine, the first one the department has ever had, Cox said.
"There's a chance we could get a demo model," he said.
...
"This will mean we can respond more efficiently to fire calls," Cox said."It shows the fire department is moving forward. We're trying to get more volunteers and more training."
The grant requires a $9,900 local match which hopefully will be coming from the Decatur Township Trustees, Cox said. The department only gets $2,018 a year through its fire levy, he said.
Decatur is talking with Washington Township officials about providing fire coverage to that township, too, Cox said."We hope to get a contract with them.We could try to set up a satellite fire station in Washington Township," he said.
The new firetruck is desperately needed, Cox said. The department has three trucks in service, but none are in really good shape, he said.
"We went out on a run and one of the trucks had to turn back when it was stuck in third gear," he said."You need to have confidence you can leave the station and get to a fire," Cox said.
The department has about a dozen volunteer firefighters, he said.
