The recipients of this year's Honorary Life Membership Award are Joan Corwin of the Chappaqua Bus Company and Ann Karagosian, Executive Director of the Chappaqua Children's Workshop.
    ...
Joan Corwin is known to everyone with a child in the Chappaqua school district - she is, as rumor has it, the power decision-maker on emergency dismissals and 2-hour weather delays.

Joan's resume is full of awards, accomplishments and just plain interesting facts!

Joan started at Chappaqua Transportation in 1970, and is now its CEO. It has grown to 110 drivers, with 45 buses, 65 vans, 8 coaches and $7 million in revenue and is known nationwide as a model bus company. She is well known in her industry.

Joan has served on New York State-level industry committees for driver instruction and safety. She was influential in passing the legislation banning use of cell phones while driving, and spoke, at the request of Governor Pataki, at the bill signing ceremony in June 2001. Joan is a recent recipient of the E. Mario Cribari Award for Volunteer Service, given by Westchester County, as well as the 2003 recipient of the Westchester Women in Small Business Award.

When Joan gets involved in something, she does it all the way. She joined the Chappaqua Volunteer Ambulance Corps in 1972 and she served as Lieutenant, Captain and Chairperson of the Chappaqua Volunteer Ambulance Corps, each multiple times. Similarly, Joan became a member of the Chappaqua Rotary Club in 1987, and has served separate terms as its President, Treasurer, and as a Board Member. Her involvement with the ambulance corps actually prompted her to become a registered nurse.

Joan's less public face is just as impressive. She has adopted a mentally challenged family to which she provides transportation and shelter, and also provides transportation to some of our community's senior residents. In the past, Principals at Greeley have asked Joan to "house" less fortunate students and help them get away from dysfunctional families. She has opened her heart and her home to these young people and has really made a huge difference in their lives.

Joan is boss and mother to 5 children. She enjoys gardening and is talking about retiring, but, according to one of her children (and I won't say which one!) Joan's a hands-on control freak and doubts she is going to retire any time soon…

I mentioned that Joan and Ann are close friends - a friendship borne from working together to transport our children to and from their elementary schools to CCW.
    ...
Every year, Ann figured out how to move the program and every year, Joan worked out how to move the children!
    ...
In honor of Joan and Ann, the Chappaqua PTA will make contributions to the New York State PTA scholarship fund.
    ...
Whereas the Award Committee has broken with tradition and made 2 awards tonight, I am sure that Joan and Ann disagree - in their view, they are sharing one important honor equally, just as they share their friendship. May I present our award recipients - Joan Corwin and Ann Karagosian!
