   SAN JUAN , PUERTO RICO , September 2 , 1999 - Puerto Rico's Governor , Hon. Pedro Roselló , last week appointed José A. Corujo to the position of executive director of the Puerto Rico Tourism Company.

   Having served as deputy executive director in charge of finance for the PRTC since March 1997 , Corujo is an experienced leader in tourism.
   
   I am delighted to accept this position at such an exciting time for tourism in Puerto Rico. The island is undergoing tremendous growth and development that includes the construction of the convention center and business district , the addition of new hotel and resort properties , and consistent and solid growth in hotel occupancy rates – an increase of 53.6% between 1992 and 1999 , said Corujo.
   
   In his two-and-a-half years at the PRTC , Corujo has played a pivotal role in island affairs , including the 1997 approval of amendments to Puerto Rico's gaming legislation , which gave island casinos the flexibility to remain globally competitive. He has also acted as executive director of the PRTC , representing Puerto Rico at important international trade events such as FITUR , the second largest tourism fair in Europe.
   
   Before joining the Tourism Company , Corujo worked for eight years as a certified public accountant. He held positions with local and international firms , including Ernst & Young , where he was an audit manager.
   
   In addition to serving as executive director of the PRTC , Corujo remains president of the Hotel Development Corporation , a subsidiary of PRTC. He also holds positions on the boards of directors for the Puerto Rico Convention Bureau , the Puerto Rico Hotel and Tourism Association , the Puerto Rico Economic Development Bank , and the Puerto Rico Ports Authority. In the past , he was president of the San Juan chapter of the Puerto Rico Society of Certified Public Accountants.
   
   The Puerto Rico Tourism Company is the government agency in charge of developing and implementing public policy for the tourism industry in Puerto Rico , as well as promoting the island as a destination.
