Brooklyn Council's Leadership Training Chairman
Leonel is a Manager of Program Development for the Information Technology Department at Penguin Group US Inc. He is also a managing partner in Leocor Corporation, a Consulting Firm. Leonel has been Executive Director of MIS for Madison Square Garden from where he retired in 1987, Director of Data Network Services for ADP and Manager of Accounting Systems for Mutual Benefit.
Leonel with Bob & Yogi Born in Cuba, Mr. Cortizo attended the Managua Military School obtaining a degree in Military Science and Engineering. Later in the United States he obtained a Masters Degree in Business Administration from New York University.
In 1971, Mr. Cortizo joined the Boy Scouts of America as an Assistant Cubmaster in Pack 103, Gateway District, Queens. During his 32 years of tenure in the BSA he has performed in every capacity in the three BSA programs. In 1984 he became Director of Volunteer Training for GNYC after having been in that position at the District and Local Council levels. He was a member of the National Scouting Training Task Force and an Instructor at the Philmont Training Base. For the past 15 years he has been an Auxiliary Member of BSA National Training Committee.
He was a member of the Woodbadge Training Staff under William "Green Bar Bill" Hillcourt. He has participated in more than 15 Woodbadge courses and was appointed Course Director in 1989. He also has been course director for more than 30 standard courses and at least 15 experimental courses including Train the Trainer, Institute of Boy Scouting, Boy Scout University, National Administration of Training, Junior Leaders Training and Commissioners Conference. He is a pioneer in leadership development.
Leonel with Bobby After his wife got ill in 1989, Mr. Cortizo reduced his outside activities until her death in 1995. He re-married in 1999 to Mrs. Joan S. Kennedy a friend and fellow Woodbadge staffer. Between both of them they have 8 children, 13 grandchildren and 2 great-grand children. Mr. Cortizo is also involved in Masonry in the State of New York and has been Master of Goldenrule Clermont McKinley Lodge 2000-2002 and Floral Park Lodge 2002-2003 during the past three years.
Leonel received the new Daniel Carter Beard Masonic Scouting Award this past June. Mr. Cortizo has been a member of troop 20 in Brooklyn for the last 20 years and also a member of the GNYC and Hudson Valley Council Executive Boards and District Chairman for the Nav-A-Len District in Sullivan County.
Mr. Cortizo has rejoined the Brooklyn Council as Training Chairman hoping to bring the New Scouting for the 21st Century program to our units and scout leaders in the Brooklyn Council. -
