Dr Cortizo completed his PhD at Monash University in the Department of Biochemistry, Faculty of Medicine. During his PhD studies, he was involved in collaborative research in the USA at the Department of Pathology, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, later to become part of the Department of Biochemistry at La Trobe University. Since then he has worked at the Department of Medicine, Alfred Hospital Monash Medical School. He then joined CSL as a Protein Chemist and thereafter held the position of Product Specialist, Manager and Project Manager. He was involved in the manufacture & introduction of new products and the setting up of clinical trials assessing products for the treatment of haemophilia and blood disorders. In the last few years he has been actively involved with a number of enterprises specialising in the fields of microbiology and biotechnology. Most notably, in the development of microbiological products for human consumption (probiotics); environmental bioremediation through the neutralisation of harmful chemicals from industry, and in agriculture to enhance yields, shelf life and nutritional quality of produce. Dr Cortizo is a regular presenter at the GPCE and other international conferences. -

Dr Fernando Cortizo, BSc (Hons), PhD
Dr Fernando Cortizo completed his PhD at Monash University in the Department of Biochemistry, Faculty of Medicine. During his PhD studies, he became a member of the Diabetes Research Group and was trained in the area of Endocrinology, specializing in Insulin action and Insulin receptors in muscle. At the same time he was also involved in collaborative research in the USA at the Department of Pathology, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, followed by an appointment as Head of the Teaching laboratories of the Department of Biochemistry at La Trobe University, Bundoora. He is currently engaged as an Integrative Medicine Consultant to Pathlab in Melbourne.
