   Musician and conductor, Hector Cortes, has formed a new group called The Calpe Singers. Hector who moved with his wife, Johanna, and his family to the UK earlier this year, has created the Wiltshire version of the singers.
   
   "I always knew that I wanted to restart the Calpe Singers here, and also have the same name. After all, it was always my baby, the Gibraltar group I had, I was able to get to a high standard (with Johanna's help) through sheer hard work; I still have over seven hundred arrangements for four voice choirs I wrote for them.........what better way than to continue over here?" he told the Chronicle. The Calpe Singers in Wiltshire made their debut recently and performed at a retirement home in the country in Warminster. The weekly newspaper the Wiltshire Times headlined their story "Singers Delight on Debut". It reported, "The choir, made up of members from Zimbabwe, Yorkshire, the South West, Italy and of course, a few members from Gibraltar, under the direction of their conductor Hector Cortes, sang a programme called "60 Years On", which delighted the audience so much that they have been invited back for another programme on September 18."

   HECTOR Cortes, 61, is a retired conductor and author. Born and bred in Gibraltar, he decided to retire in Westbury and has lived in Wiltshire for more than four years.
   
   During his time as a conductor Mr Cortes has performed for Pope John Paul II alongside his wife Johanna, who is a soprano soloist. The couple are staging a concert in memory of British servicemen killed in the Second World War later this year. Mr Cortes has written three books since retiring, two thrillers called Anti Christ and In The Name Of Evil and a third novel called Memoirs Of A Trombone Player. He has two sons aged 21 and 24 and a daughter aged 27.
