Council members voted Thursday to cancel the Summer Magic Festival and Spring Celebration, Jim Thorpe Area Council President Ralph Cortazzo said Friday.
...
"We feel that the JTAC has enough of a workload," Cortazzo said.
...
"If the weather's decent it goes over pretty big," Cortazzo said.
...
"We think we get a lot of bang for our buck," Cortazzo said. The businesses "all benefit from the festivals and the visitors."
The council has 143 members. If there were more members, the group might have the money and volunteers for more festivals, Cortazzo said. -

Ralph Cortazzo, president of the Jim Thorpe Area Council of the Carbon County Chamber of Commerce, which hosted the celebration, said that this year's celebration was a hugh success."This is our best turnout to date for this event," Cortazzo said. "The committee members [who organized the weekend] did a good job of promoting everything."In addition, Cortazzo attributed the success to a slew of new attractions, which he said he hopes will become permanent features for the mid-winter festival."We asked the National Honor Society kids from the [Jim Thorpe Area] high school to run the different games that we have, such as the hockey, fish and snowman games," Cortazzo said. "That came about because our vice president, Penelope Briggman, has two kids at the school. They've done a fine job and we're glad to have them."Half of the proceeds earned through the games will be donated to the NHS, Cortazzo added.

No strangers to Jim Thorpe, the Bucktails had originally planned on camping for the weekend at Mauch Chunk Lake, however temperatures that dove well below the freezing mark sent them in search of warmer accommodations."Nearly everyone has gotten to shoot one of their rifles," Cortazzo said.
