   Garth began his drafting career working for a mechanical contractor in Winnipeg, beginning in 1969. In 1972 he moved to Calgary to pursue his career in the oil and gas industry. During the early 70's he worked at various engineering and oil companies in Calgary and Montreal, including Dome Petroleum and a ethylene facility operated by Gulf Canada outside of Montreal. Upon returning to Calgary in 1977, he spent many years working for Fluor Canada, eventually as Administrator of the Piping Engineering group, supervising some 300 engineers and designers. In 1984, when the oil patch was at its lowest ebb, Garth formed Caltech, going out on his own to service a new relationship directly.

   Born in Winnipeg, the son of a Scottish immigrant, Garth has been married to his wife Barbara since 1972 and has three children.
