   PORT CHARLOTTE -- As Port Charlotte Middle School Vice Principal Cathy Corsaletti stood in the middle of the surprisingly sparsely filled hallway, numerous students nervously approached her and asked for directions.

   "It was a sight to see," Corsaletti said.
   
   Also, attendance at the school was down by more than 200 students. Corsaletti said only around 790 students went to school, down from slightly more than 1,000 at L.A. Ainger and around 1,100 before Charley came through the area.
   
   Corsaletti was baffled at why the attendance fell even further, other than attendance is usually low on "first" days.
