   Robin Corrigan and her two daughters, Larkin, 11, and Lanie, 8, live directly across from the North Garden. They've been clipping away at the gardens since 1992.
   
   "When the kids were little, they didn't have a choice," Corrigan says.

   "We started Adopt-A-Bed last summer, and it's just taken off," says Corrigan, vice president of FLAG. "People can work on the roses on their own schedule. The roses benefit, the city benefits, everyone benefits."
   
   Adopting a bed requires more of a commitment than the Saturday pruning sessions, Corrigan says.

   The North Garden was redesigned in the '70s so that city workers could use riding lawn mowers, but the neighborhood was so upset that plans to change the other three gardens were dropped, according to Corrigan. Then in the '90s, FLAG managed to get arborvitae and rhododendrons that had been planted in the North Garden replaced with roses. Still, the design isn't the original.
   
   While the compass design makes for an interesting tidbit, most people haven't a clue about the structure. They just love soaking up the sun while sniffing the heavy fragrance of roses in bloom. Corrigan watches the regulars, including a man who comes out to practice his cello in the North Garden and a group of Russian women who show up to bask in even the slightest ray of sunshine.
