"Many of those who obtained national certification know they can go anyplace in the country and be recognized for having that certification," said Linda Corrigan, RN, director of nursing recruitment at St. Joseph's.
But because many of the nurses stay at St. Joseph's, Corrigan said, "We are typically able to promote within and we look certainly more favorably on those individuals who have taken advantage of the professional program."

"I think [Janis Kohlbrenner] did a nice job of developing a program that wasn't just financially based or based on obtaining certification, but also incorporated the professional behaviors that reflect our nursing staff so well," said Corrigan.

"They have tremendous pride" said Corrigan, who mentioned that as of this writing St. Joseph's did not have any vacancies for registered nurses.
She added that when St. Joseph's physicians were surveyed as to what attracts them to practice at St. Joseph's, one of the number one reasons was the nursing staff.
"There's a lot of autonomy here," said Corrigan.
